Childnet Workshops Online Safety

We were very pleased to be able to welcome Childnet to our school last week to discuss online safety with our children in Key Stage 2, staff and parents.

They promoted open conversations with our young people about the online platforms they were using and highlighted the importance of understanding the potential risks, taking steps to prevent these risks and how to respond to any risk that they may come across. They framed these discussion around the 4c’s of online safety:

Content- knowing what our young people are looking at on the internet

Conduct- thinking about how our young people are behaving online

Contact- knowing who are young people interacting with online

Commerce – knowing the children’s understanding of risks such as in-app purchases, online gambling, phishing, financial scams and pop ups.

The presenters commented on our children’s strong knowledge of online safety and how they were very open about the platforms and content they were engaging with.

Childnet also ran a parent workshop after school which was full of useful information and guidance on a range of key online safety topics.

Some particularly useful websites for parents are:

Parental Controls & Privacy Settings Guides | Internet Matters: give step by step guides on how to set parental controls on a range of  social media sites, gaming platforms, gaming devices, smart phones and other devices,  broadband and mobile networks, entertainment and search engines
